The Whale That Broke Through
I was scrolling through Facebook the other day, and I came across a somewhat lengthy post. The post asserted that many people don’t have a basic understanding of constitutional liberty in America. The reason? People are forgetting the responsibility required to uphold it.
Many people on the left expect that liberty is self-sustaining and eternal. Freedoms and rights are more about the absence of obstacles that would hinder the ability to live and think the way you want. And if constitutional, Christian principles of the founders or anything else get in the way of that, they should be tossed.
The constitution, laws, institutions, ideas, and principles that provided our rights and liberties as Americans get tossed in the name of “freedom”. And then people invite in anarchy or socialism or something like it. The ideologies that are incompatible with the architecture of this nation.
Consider this quote from John Adams in 1798
“We have no Government armed with Power capable of contending with human Passions unbridled by morality and Religion. Avarice, Ambition, Revenge, or Gallantry, would break the strongest Cords of our Constitution as a Whale goes through a Net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
-John Adams
When enough people lose that inner brake, the parchment barriers don’t stand a chance. Ambition, envy, and raw ideology rip right through like a whale through a net.
America is an experiment that requires individual participation. Sitting by and complaining about what “America isn’t doing for you” is lazy. We don’t live in a utopia. There’s no such thing.
You’ll notice that many of the new ideologies coming in are inherently selfish—socialism, communism, and radical political Islam. They look like the most generous movements on the planet, upholding the underdog and promoting change through agitation and force. Guilt, shame, and compassion are weaponized to gain power.
But once the “out group” is in power, it’s game over for everyone else. History is crystal-clear: the new priests of “justice,” whether secular or theocratic, always end up crushing the very people they claimed to save.
The classical American understanding of liberty, generosity, and care for the underdog is supposed to be voluntary. It’s local and rooted in personal responsibility—the institutions of church, family, community, and charity. But that must be taught. And people must WANT to do it that way. Even the smallest local action can have ripples that extend all the way to Washington, D.C.
Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country - John F. Kennedy
The media banks on people voting and thinking based on their emotions. Wanting people to believe that their concept of freedom and liberty aligns with what it’s always been. And can therefore say “this is what America is supposed to be”. It’s a form of projection!
People do the same thing with God. People would say, “If God is supposed to be good, he wouldn’t have done those terrible things in the Old Testament. Jesus is supposed to be loving, so He wouldn’t say there was only one way to Him.” Same trick. Remake the founding document (the Bible or the Constitution) into whatever feels good today, rather than conforming to what it actually demands.
Every nation on earth has some guiding document or documents that determine the position, or at least the principles, that the government takes on issues. Politicians must decide how to interpret these principles, create laws, and make decisions. If at all. That’s when politics gets messy. And people get upset and argue, and protest.
So it’s essential to identify principles that everyone can agree on, which requires decisions. But here’s the hard truth: there is no clean “middle line” between “what America means to you” and “what America is founded on.”
The real middle line is re-teaching the founding principles so clearly and living them so consistently that most of us voluntarily choose them again before the whale hits the net and it’s too late.
